General Notes: Husband - Lawrence H. McDowell

First gaining an education in the public schools, he at once joined his father in the laundry business when he was ready to go to work. In 1891 he established in Butler, Pennsylvania, what was then an innovation in the industrial field of that locality, a steam laundry. From that time until his death, he continued to build up his business, keeping pace with the improvements that were made in laundry equipment and extending his field of operations. At his death, his widow and her four sons took over the business and continued the work he established. Mrs. McDowell and her sons, Lawrence H. McDowell and J. Q. A. McDowell, were then the proprietors. More than twenty employees were kept busy at the laundry, and their delivery wagons covered a radius of fifteen miles in reaching their patrons.
Mr. McDowell was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, for which he enlisted with Company E, 15th Regiment. During the World War, he was one of the company of citizens who put through the Liberty Loan drives. Politically, he was a Republican. He was a member of the Board of Commerce, of which his father was one of the founders. Fraternally, he was connected with the Knights of Pythias, the Knights of Malta, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Encampment.
