He served in the Civil War: he enlisted, in August, 1861, in Company E, Thirty-first Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry [Thirty-first Ohio Volunteers?], and was an active participant in twenty-two battles; he fell on the field of Chickamauga.
