He was educated in the graded public schools of Ludlow, Pennsylvania, and later was gradu­ated in course from Clark's Business College at Erie, Pennsylvania. He began business life as clerk in the Dime Savings Bank at Erie, then for a while was engaged in lumber manu­facture and saw milling, then entered the em­ploy of the Refiners Gas Company, of Warren, Pennsylvania, as stationary engineer. He was later a gauger for the Wilburine Pipe Line Company, of Warren, Pennsylvania. He was a Republican in politics; served as county committeeman and school director; treasurer of Hamilton township school board of McKean County, and was the treas­urer of Mead township school board, Warren County. His fraternity was the Independent Or­der of Odd Fellows.
