He was educated at Jefferson College, Washington County, Pennsylvania, until the out-break of the rebellion, when he enlisted in Co. G, 28th P. V., Col. Geary commanding. For sixteen months he was with the regiment in all its engagements, was then discharged on account of disability, and following winter resumed his studies. Entering Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia, from there he graduated, in 1868. For one year he practiced medicine with his father, and in June, 1869, he went to Europe, where he attended medical lectures in Paris during the winter of 1869-70. In June of latter year he returned home to Pittsburgh, where he then engaged in the practice of his profession.
