General Notes: Husband - Col. Joseph Collins

He came from the Eastern shore of Maryland, near Snow Hill where he was born, with an uncle to Washington County, Pennsylvania, and thence to Westmoreland. He was a member and Ruling Elder of the Presbyterian Church at Long Run in 1798. He served as Colonel of the Militia and is said to have established the_ first camp for Annual Drill at Clover Hill. He was an enlisted soldier in the War of 1812. Records show that "Joseph Collins was in service for six months, from May 5, 1813 to Nov. 5, 1813". The Captain of his Company was D. McCowan and the Colonel of the Regiment was Hill Rees. One of their marches was to Erie, PA.

General Notes: Wife - Abigail "Indian Abby" Byram

Abby Byram, when a girl of eight years, was captured with her father, by a band of Seneca Indians. This was April 7, 1779. The captives were fairly well treated by the Indians during the two years they were with them, but suffered much from cold, fatigue and hunger while in camp and on marches from place to place. One winter they were taken to Canada, and for a time they were in the power of Joseph Brant, the fiendish leader of the hostile Indians. Finally they were released and made their way back to New Jersey, the old home of the Byrams. Abby married Joseph Collins and they lived on the farm where she had been taken captive. After her husband's death and when her children had left home, she lived with her son William, and after his death with her son-in-law, Squire Greer, who had married her daughter Abigail. There she died, within a half mile of the place where she was captured, aged eighty-six years.
