He received a common school training and worked on the farm till his majority, after which he mostly followed carpentering. He owned a farm of fifty-five acres. He served his district six years as School Director. In politics he was a Democrat.

He and his wife were blessed with eight chil­dren, of whom seven were living in 1885-four sons and three daughters.
