He and his brothers, J. W. and T. H., began business in Greenfield, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, under the firm name of Byers Bros., in 1866, conducting a general merchandise store, and in addition carrying on an extensive business in shipping stock, grain, wool and farm products to Pittsburgh and other markets.
