He was born and passed his early youth on the home farm in South Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, receiving his education in the local schools. He always lived on the home place, and In 1886 he and his brother built a handsome residence occupied by them, which was furnished with all modern con­veniences. He was a Democrat, and a valued mem­ber of that party. He was always interested in the schools of the township, having been a school director several years. He and his wife were adherents of the Pres­byterian Church.
