Reared on the farm and educated in the country schools, at the age of eighteen years, he turned his attention to the tinner's trade, at which he served a three-years' apprenticeship. Through another three years he continued with his first employer as a journeyman, and in 1886 established a small tin shop and hardware store of his own in Mahaffey. From time to time, to meet the growing demands of his trade, he enlarged his stock until he had the most completely equipped and extensive hardware store in the county. In addition to all kinds of shelf and heavy hardware he carried a full line of paints, oils, etc., and took contracts for plumbing, iron and tin work. He also dealt in agricultural implements, and had a wagon and carriage repository. His store occupies a large three-story brick block on the most conspicuous corner in Mahaffey, and in addition he had a large warehouse, both buildings being among his real-estate holdings.
