In early life he was a teamster, for fifteen years driving a team between Baltimore, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. From 1839 to the end of his life he lived in South Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in the labors of a farmer. He was a member of the Lutheran church.
