He was born in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, where he attended the public schools, also he attended Westminster College in New Wilmington. He then became secretary of the New Castle Wire Nail Company, continuing as such from 1886 to 1899; secretary of the Shenango Valley Steel Company, of New Castle, from 1899 to 1900; vice-president of the National Bank of Lawrence County from 1906 to 1919, president of that bank from 1919; vice-president of the Safe Deposit & Trust Company of Lawrence County from 1916; vice-president of the Mahoning Trust Company; vice-president of the Shenango Pottery Company. He was a Republican but never held office, a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Lawrence Club of New Castle; the Duquesne Club of Pittsburgh, and the New Castle Field Club. His family attended the First Presbyterian Church.
