General Notes: Husband - Chittenden Lewis

He was one of the early settlers of Cleveland, Ohio, having come there from Vermont in 1830.

He was named by his grandmother, Lucy (Chittenden) Merritt, a relative of Governor Chittenden, who gave to his namesake a pair of steers. Chittenden Lewis moved to Malone, New York, in 1834, and afterward to Cleveland, Ohio, where he died. He told his children that the family records were destroyed by fire when he was a small lad, and that he remembered having seen his father's sword, cocked hat and commission with its big seal. He was the first trader in Ohio City, later a part of Cleveland. [GPHAV, 602]
