He was born in County Derry, Ireland, and was a lad of eight years when his parents came to America. They settled in New England, where Thomas grew up, and with his wife, migrated to Montgomery County, New York, where for some years he followed his occupation of blacksmithing, and later in life he moved to western New York, and died at Wales, Erie County.

Among his children were also several daughters.
