He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and there engaged in the real estate business, making and losing several fortunes. At the time of the discovery of oil he moved from Pittsburgh to Oil City, Pennsylvania, and turned his attention to the oil industry.

During the Civil War he served in the Union Army.

He and his wife became the parents of five children.
