General Notes: Husband - Johanis Conrad Büchli

The Beighleys were originally large landholders in the Rhine Valley of northern France. Their name was Buehl and they were French Huguenots who were in turn knighted and persecuted by French kings. Tradition relates this interesting incident. As it was the custom of Louis XIV and his Prime Ministers, who believed in the Divine Right of Kings, to force the Catholic faith upon his subjects, the detested Dragonade entered the home of Johan Buehl who handed the officer a small Bible saying, "I am guided by this book and I will flourish as yon evergreen tree." This was related to the King who so admired his courage that he knighted him as one of his officers, bestowed upon him a "coat of arms"-described by the college of heraldry-and gave him the name of Büchli-meaning "little book" referring to the little Bible which John had so bravely handed the soldier. After the revoking of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV, the family removed to Germany. When militaristic rule became unbearable there, they emigrated to America. The first to come was Conrad Beighley. His father, Johanis Conrad Büchli, later came to the United States with two other sons, Heinrich and Peter.
