He came to Alexandria, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, about 1800 as a hatter, but subsequently became a prominent business man.

He was a merchant in Alexandria, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania; postmaster from 1812 to 1815; represented Huntingdon County in the State Legislature 1815 to 1818; county commissioner, 1825 to 1828.
