The family of Buchanan is a very ancient one in the Highlands of Scotland, dating from the year 1016, and constitutes one of the Highland Clans. The genealogy of the family was published in 1723, by William Buchanan of Auchmar, entitled an "Essay on the Surname of Buchanan." Of this family of the Drumakill branch, was Mungo Buchanan.
