He was educated in his native city, graduating at the Iron City Commercial Institute. He secured a position in the Farmers' Deposit National Bank, and for four years enjoyed the entire confidence of the concern. His contact with business-men gave him a knowledge of commercial life that few men of his years possessed. In 1879 he went to Homestead, Pennsylvania, where he was a stockholder in the Bryce, Higbee & Co. Glasshouse. He was a member of the Improved Order of Heptasophs and Knights of the Mystic Chain. He was an active worker in the republican party.
