He received his education in the schools of the township, after which he followed teach­ing some five years. In 1879 he entered mer­cantile business in Rebersburg, Pennsylvania, buying out J. Spiglemyer, and continued this business for five years, at the end of which time he commenced farm­ing, which vocation he followed up to 1890, when he built a pleasant home at Rebersburg, where he then lived retired. In December, 1894, he graduated from the Chautauqua University at Syracuse, NY, and took a read­ing course from that institution.
He and his wife were active members of the Reformed Church. In politics he was a Democrat, and filled various township and school offices.
