He was graduated at Marshall College in 1847, and as an M. D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1851; he practiced his profession at Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He recruited Company C, 126th P. V. I., of which he was commissioned captain, Aug. 11, 1862; he was promoted to be major, March 9, 1863.
