General Notes: Husband - James Criswell

He was born in the City of Derry, Ireland, there grew to manhood, and in 1819, made up his mind to come to the United States. After a stormy voyage across the Atlantic in the ship "Constellation," occupying some thirty days, the vessel was wrecked off the coast of Nova Scotia, and the passengers lost everything except the clothes upon their backs. From St. John's, New Brunswick, Mr. Criswell worked his passage to Philadelphia, and walked from that city to Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he was glad to get work on a farm at four dollars and fifty cents per month, and take his pay in trade.
In 1830 Mr. Criswell purchased a farm from Hugh Davis, of Allegheny, containing "200 acres more or less," lying in Clinton township, Butler County, for which he paid $500. When the tract was afterwards surveyed it was found to contain 240 acres. There were some four acres cleared and a small log cabin, with puncheon flooring and a door made of sawed boards, with wooden hinges. Mr. Criswell resided upon this farm forty years.

In crossing the Atlantic Ocean, his vessel was wrecked on the shores of Nova Scotia, but he was transferred to another ship which took him to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From there he walked to Pittsburgh, and as he was poor, worked by the way, and later secured employment on a farm in Washington County. There he remained for eight years, saving his money, and then bought 200 acres of land in Clinton Township, for which he paid $400. When the State survey was made it was found that the tract contained 240 acres. It was wild land that he had to clear and he developed it into an excellent farm and prospered as a farmer and cattle-raiser.

He and his wife reared a family of six sons and three daughters, and three children died in infancy.

General Notes: Wife - Jane Brownlow

She came with her parents to Philadelphia, and thence by wagon to Washington County, Pennsylvania. They had to pay seven dollars and fifty cents in gold per 100 pounds for their baggage transportation from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, and she, too, was weighed and charged for at the same rate, her parents walking the whole distance to save expense, and spending fourteen days on the journey.

She came to America from County Derry, Ireland, when she was eleven years old, her parents being people of means for those days. Her parents walked from the point where their baggage was deposited to Butler County, Pennsylvania, in order to save freight charges, but their daughter was weighed in with their other luggage and transported with it for $7.50 per 100 pounds.
