General Notes: Husband - Hayden Leroy Stright


He spent his childhood and youth in the lumber woods, on a farm and in the small town of Sheakleyville, Pennsylvania. After graduation from Greenville High School in 1915 he attended Thiel College and was graduated in 1919. In 1918 he served in the Students Army Training Corps at Thiel. Following graduation he worked on the carpenter gang and with an electrician at the Greenville Steel Car Company.
From 1920 to 1922 he attended Boston University School of Religious Education and Social Service earn­ing a Master of Religious Education degree. (M.R.E.)
After serving as Director of Young People's Work and Weekday Church Schools with the Ramsey County (St. Paul, Minnesota) Sunday School Association he spent the summer of 1924 in travel and study in Europe. Upon returning he served for five years as Director of Religious Education at the Methodist Church at Newtonville, Massachusetts. During that time he earned the Master of Arts degree at the Graduate School of Boston University where he was also an instructor in the Department of Religious Education.
From 1929 to 1964 he served as Executive Secretary of the Minnesota Council of Religious Education and its successor, the Minnesota Council of Churches. For four years after his resignation as Executive Secretary he served as part-time Director of Development for the Minnesota Protestant Center which was dedicated in 1964.
He served in many capacities on state-wide, national and world committees and agencies. He was one of the organizers and a president of the Associa­tion of Council Secretaries. He served on the General Board of the National Council of Churches and on many of its committees, including the chairman of two different Advisory Sections. From 1947 to 1963 he was an official representative on the World Assembly of the World Council of Christian Education and attended meetings in Germany, England and Ireland.
Among honors received were: the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Carleton College in 1954, Distin­guished Alumni Award from Thiel College in 1966, the WCCO Radio Good Neighbor Award and the WTCN Radio Outstanding Community Service Award in 1963. He was active in State and County Historical Societies and served more than 10 years on the Board of Directors of the Ramsey County, Minnesota, Historical Society and as president from 1968 to 1970.
He was author of TOGETHER, the story of church cooperation in Minnesota.
He was listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA, CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS and other similar publications.
He was an ordained Baptist minister and a member of Park Baptist Church, St. Paul.
