He was educated in the common schools and at Pittsburg Academy, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He began industrial life as a lineman with an electric company. In the spring of 1906 he turned his attention to merchandising and opened up a store at Thompsonville, where he carried a first-class stock of goods and also handled farm machinery and supplies.
He never married, and after the death of his mother made his home with his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Joseph E. Caldwell.
