General Notes: Husband - Clark Brown

He was seventeen years old when he came to Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. He was educated in the schools of his native county, also in the academy at Clearfield, and in early manhood engaged in agriculture. In 1846 he and his brother Samuel purchased 140 acres of timber land, upon which he settled in the following year, undergoing the usual experiences of a pioneer farmer before the estate was cleared and improved. He followed agricultural pursuits for many years. In 1888 he took charge of the "Mansion House" at Clearfield, which he conducted for three and a half years.
He was active in local affairs and in political work, and was many times chosen on the Democratic ticket to offices of trust and responsibility. In 1868 he was elected county auditor, and in 1873 was elected county commissioner, to which office he was reelected in 1875; in 1884 he was again elected to that position, making twelve years in all that he served as a county official. He was the first commissioner to hold a second term in that county, and the only one to hold the office a third term. He held all the offices in Lawrence township except those of justice of the peace, and constable, and for years was a member of the school board.
