His education began in the public schools of Washington township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, was continued in a private school superintended by Professor Gilchrist and was completed at a business college in Pittsburgh. In partnership with Mr. Binns and Mr. Cope he organized a private bank, transacting business under the firm name of Binns, Cope & Brown. This bank later was reorganized as the Fayette City National Bank, of which Mr. Brown was president from its inception. He resided on the old homestead which had been in the family ever since the original patent was granted. He was a Prohibitionist in politics, and a member of the Rehoboth Church.
