He and his wife settled on the Lake road in Vernon township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in 1798. They purchased 160 acres from an old Revolutionary soldier, Mr. Relaigh. They had fourteen children, of whom six survived in 1885.
He served his country in the War of 1812.
