His father was a soldier of the Revolutionary War.

He was a resident of Cortland County, New York, and removed with his family to Erie, Pennsylvania, in the year 1824. He followed agricultural pursuits, and was a man of much influence in church and public affairs. He married and raised a family of ten children.
