General Notes: Husband - Samuel Sloan, Sr.

Several members of the Sloan family settled in Hanover township, now York County, Pennsylvania, as early as 1730. John Sloan, who died September, 1741, left a wife Jean, and children: James, Robert, William, John, George, Sarah and Cinquas. On the tax lists of Hanover for 1751-56-59, only the names of John and Samuel Sloan appear. In the next list, 1769, John disappears, and the names of Samuel, James, Archibald and William appear. Samuel Sloan died in October, 1777, leaving brothers: John, James, Archibald and William.
The Samuel Sloan who appeared with others of the name in Butler County about 1800, was a descendant of this Hanover family, supposed son of Samuel Sloan, who died in 1777. This branch of the Sloan family came to Venango County from Butler County in 1807. The first Sloan in Butler County, settling in Venango township, was Samuel Sloan.

He settled in Venango township, Butler County, between the years 1797 and 1803, married, and engaged in lumbering and farming until his death. He was a man of some prominence in local public affairs, affiliating with the Whig party.

Samuel Sloan, for many years an Elder of the Old Seceder Church was one of the first settlers of Butler County, Pennsylvania, and passed his days on the farm which later was owned by Thomas Morrows. He came from Westmoreland County, bringing his wife, with one child in her arms, and his household goods on one horse. For some years he obtained his supply of flour in Westmoreland County. Pack-horses did all the carrying. Groceries were used but sparingly, for in addition to their cost, tedious journeys, lasting several days, were necessary in order to procure them. His farm was for a long time the muster ground for the militia of that part of the county, and the woods around often rang with the echo of the officers' commands, while the soldiers engaged in mimic warfare, with sticks for guns. The old gentleman killed a great many deer and tanned the hides, which were made into breeches and moccasins for the men and boys. [HBC 1883, 450]

William and Nancy are not listed among his children in [HVC 1890, 946] but are given in [HBC 1883, 450].
