General Notes: Husband - John Brandon

He was of Dutch extraction and was the founder of the family in Butler County, PA. He settled in the region that is now Forward Township, about the year 1798. He served in the War of 1812 and suffered all the rest of his life from injuries received during his military service.

He came from Eastern Pennsylvania to Westmoreland County, thence removed to Mercer County, and, after a short residence there, came to Butler County and taught school. About 1807, he married and settled north of the Connoquenessing. He was out in the war of 1812 a short time.
He served one term as County Commissioner and was one of the most active citizens in support of a temperance movement which originated in the neighborhood, and, in 1830, resulted in the formation of a total abstinence society, which met for some time at his house, but afterward, assuming greater proportions, temperance meetings were held at the church, and many became teetotalers. Mr. Brandon signed the total abstinence pledge among the very first, and strove to discourage the use of spirits. He was unable to hire help in harvest the following season, because he would allow no whisky on his premises. But a year later, help was plenty and sobriety the rule.
He lived to the ripe old age of ninety-two.
