General Notes: Husband - James Brandon

James was then the oldest of the family, and when his father went to fight in the War of 1812, many of the cares of the family devolved upon him. When he was a boy there were no schools, and none were established until many years after. For a number of years he followed hunting to a considerable extent, and killed many deer, bears, and other kinds of game. Some five years after his marriage he removed to Rockland township, Venango County, PA, and settled on the river at what became known as Brandon's ferry, from whom the place took its name. Here he resided until the oil excitement, and sold out in 1864. He realized $15,000 out of his lands then, which was more than he ever expected, and returned to Salina, bought a farm of one hundred and ten acres, and also the old homestead from his brother. He later resided in the town, and was the proprietor of the American hotel of that place. He raised a family of seven children, all but one of whom lived in the county. [HVC 1879, 588]
