There is a family of this surname, long established in Columbia County, New York, which is said to be of Scotch ancestry, but its genealogical history is not clearly known. From this family the present family may be derived.

The place of his birth is supposed to have been Canaan, Columbia County, New York. His life was passed at Canaan and at Lima, Livingston County; he was a farmer and, politically, a Whig.
