He obtained a rudimentary education in the schools of the neighborhood, which was later supplemented by attendance at the State Normal School at Edinboro, from which he graduated in the class of 1885; in Columbian University, Washington, D. C., from which he graduated in class of 1900; and in the Philadelphia Polyclinic, where he pursued a post-graduate course in 1903. During his period of study at the State Normal School he acted in the capacity of teacher in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, four years, and in Delaware County, New York, two years, also in South Glenn Falls, Saratoga County, New York, from 1888 to 1890, and in the latter named year obtained employment in the War Department at Washington, D. C. During the years 1904-05 he practiced his profession of medicine at Florence Mines, gaining valuable experience to add to the theoretical knowledge acquired in his college career, and on August 1, 1905, took up his residence in Sugargrove, Pennsylvania, and continued in active practice. He held membership in the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania State Medical Society and the Warren County Medical Society. He was a member of Sugargrove Lodge, No. 1124, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In political affairs he cast his vote for the candidate best qualified for office, irrespective of party affiliation.
