The early generations of this family were among the most prominent citizens of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and some of them were distinguished as patriots and statesmen in the history of the United States.

He came with William Penn to America in 1682, and was the first printer for the Middle Provinces as also the first to start a paper mill in Pennsylvania.
