He was reared and educated in North Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and continued agricultural pursuits on the old homestead until after his mother's death. When rich coal deposits were discovered on this land, contracts for its excavation and sale were made with the Pittsburg and Buffalo Coal Company and the work was carried on for some years before the surface land was sold. It ws some of the most valuable land in Washington County.
