He was reared on the home farm in Slippery Rock Township, Butler County, PA, and always devoted himself more or less to farming and stockraising, having pur­chased a property in 1873. He erected excellent buildings and utilized a part of the residence for store purposes, carrying a full line of dry goods and gro­ceries calculated to meet the wants of neighboring farmers.
