Until he was sixteen years of age attended the schools of Clark's Mills, Mercer County, PA. He then commenced to assist his father in the conduct of his agricultural interests, and in 1900 located at Hadley and, purchasing Samuel Mitchell’s livery business, established himself in that line, also adding to it a complete undertaking establishment, in 1901.
