General Notes: Husband - Addison Quincy Morrison

He left Tidioute, Warren County, Pennsylvania, for the west Nov. 18, 1878, arriving in Janesville, Wisconsin, November 20, 1878. On December 5, 1879, he left for Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he was married. They left Indiana to homestead in Nebraska, arriving at Stuart on April 10, 1884.

For the Pan American Exposition at Buffalo, New York, in 1901, he displayed a Nebraska Sod House. He plowed the sod near his house in Newport and loaded it in box cars for shipment to Buffalo.

Copied from THE WONDERFUL PROGRESS OF NEBRASKA, a Brochure of the Pan American Expo:
This house is made entirely of sod, with the exception of the window frames, door and roof supports. The tools used in its construction were a spade, saw, and hammer. The sods are three inches thick, one foot wide, two feet long, each weighs fifty pounds, and a total number of 3,240 were used in the construction, 350 of which were required for the roof. Three freight cars were required to transport the material to Buffalo. The dimensions of the sod house are 16 x 24 feet. The building represents a Nebraska homesteader's house commonly used in the west some 25 years ago [before 1901]. A house of this character lasted about twenty years, and was usually finished with plaster made from native lime formed under the sods, which was mixed with sand, and when dry fomed a composite as hard as brick. Two men could build a house in about 10 days, and the cost of the lumber, for window frames etc. outside of the sod was about $40.
A popular restaurant was maintained by Mrs. L. Bowser in connection with the sod house.
