General Notes: Husband - Dr. Joseph Henderson Reed

He was reared on the farm and attended a high school, receiving a good education, after which, having chosen medicine for a profession, began the study of this calling. He graduated in 1878 from the Miami Medical College, of Cincinnati, Ohio. He located in Sharon, the year of his graduation and was a regular practitioner there ever after. He came to be recognized as a strong man in the profession and was a physician of standing and eminence in western Pennsylvania. He was an active member of the American Medical Association and the State and Mercer County Societies.
The doctor was a member of the Knights of Pythias order and in his church connection was identified with the Presbyterian denomination. He took much interest in educational affairs and served as a member of the board of education. Politically, he was a Republican and took an interest in the county, state and national campaigns.

He was born in Shenango Township, near New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. He attended the elementary schools and the high school of New Castle, and had one year at a private school known as the One Study School. Preparing for his profession at Miami Medical College, Cincinnati, Ohio, he graduated with his degree of Doctor of Medicine, and established his practice at Sharon April 1, 1878. Dr. Reed was surgeon for the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Pennsylvania and Ohio Street Railway, and the Westinghouse Company. He was president of the medical staff of Buhl Hospital, Sharon; and a member of the Mercer County Medical Society, and the Pennsylvania State Medical Society. He was a member of the Sharon School Board for two years, and of the Common Council for one year. His fraternal affiliations were with the Knights of Pythias and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He was a member also of the Presbyterian Church.
During the influenza epidemic in 1918 he worked day and night until he became ill, and without fully regaining his health he continued to give aid to the sick until he finally completely broke down and died as a result.
