General Notes: Husband - John C. Offutt

He spent his boyhood days at home with his parents, and at the age of eighteen went to Youngstown, Ohio, where he clerked for a year, and acquired needful experience in business methods. He then went into business for himself at Volant, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, handling general merchandise, and was burned out only about a year after he opened the store. He was next in business in Sharon, Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1873, disposing of his interests then, and as times were slack did not again engage in business until 1882. In that year he launched a mercantile venture in Clarksville, and continued it until 1887, when he sold out his interests to White & McKinney. In the spring of 1887, Mr. Offutt became associated with the firm of Dunn & Co. of New Castle, which firm did an extensive business in furniture; after a year and a half's connection with the firm, he bought out Mr. Dunn, and the firm name was changed to Offutt & Co., and remained so until 1893, when Mr. White was taken into the firm, and it then stood as Offutt, White & Co., funeral directors and furniture dealers.

He was reared and educated in his native township, and resided on the home place until he was nineteen years of age. He then went to Youngstown, Ohio, for a brief period, after which he embarked in the mercantile business at Volant, Lawrence County. He continued there a few years, then sold out and moved to Sharon, Pennsylvania, where he resided until 1875. He was next located in the oil regions one year, after which he returned to Lawrence County and conducted his father's farm for three years. At the end of that time he bought out a mercantile establishment in Clarksville, Mercer County, which he successfully conducted until 1887, the year which marked his arrival in New Castle. In the latter city he engaged in the furniture and undertaking business in partnership with William G. Dunn. After a partnership of two years, he purchased the interest of Mr. Dunn and for a period of twelve years continued the business. He then disposed of the furniture branch of the establishment, and confined his attention to undertaking. He had in association with him one son, Frank B. Offutt, under the firm name of Offutt & Co., the latter being a graduate of Trinity Hall College, of Washington, Pennsylvania, and of the Pittsburg School of Anatomy.
Fraternally, Mr. Offutt was a member of the Masons, Knights of Pythias and Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Socially, he was a member of the Lawrence Club of New Castle. [TCHNCLC, 450]
