He was born on the farm in Peters township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood. In 1876 he purchased a home of 113 acres in North Strabane township, all under cultivation. In political opinion he voted with the Democratic party, and he held various positions of trust in North Strabane township. In religious faith he was a member of the U. P. Church, and a ruling elder in the same.
