In 1851 he and his wife came to America and settled in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, on a farm near the old "Clay Furnace" in 1853. The mother died before the Civil war and the father subsequently moved to Ohio.
He and his wife had six children that grew to adulthood; all were deceased before 1909 except John.
