He was born in Delmont, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and obtained his education in the common schools and academy of that place. He entered into his first regular employment as clerk in a store, and later became manager of the general store of the Keystone Coal and Coke Company, at Salemville, Westmoreland County.
Politically he was a Republican.
He and his wife were members of First Lutheran church of Greensburg.
