He attended common school and the high school at Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. In June, 1906, he was graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. For one year immediately following graduation he was house physician and surgeon at the City Hospital, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Then he removed to Jamison City, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, where he practiced his profession for three years. September 19, 1910, he moved to Ridgway, Elk County, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the surgical staff of the Elk County General Hospital at Ridgway. Dr. Shaw was a member of the Elk County Medical Association, the State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, also the Craftsman Club, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, the Laurel Rod and Gun Club, Ridgway, and the Ridgway Gun Club. He was a thirty-second degree Mason; member of Benton Lodge, No. 667, Free and Accepted Masons, Benton, Pennsylvania, and Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg. Although he was a Republican, he was in 1909 endorsed by the Democratic party, and elected auditor of the strongly Democratic county of Columbia.
