He was a graduate of Western Theological Seminary at Allegheny, Pennsylvania, in 1862; pastor of the Independent Presbyterian church at Carlisle, Pennsylvania; in 1867 accepted a call to the pastorate of the Independent Presbyterian church of Plainfield, New Jersey; in 1857 he instituted the Jaynes Hall Union prayer meetings in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
