He was born January 19, 1846. [GPHWP, 1697]

He was educated in the public schools, and all his life was engaged in agriculture, although he also engaged at times in merchandising. He was a carpenter and was the inventor of a most valuable dairy article, a sanitary milk pail, that he patented. He resided on and operated a farm of one hundred and thirty acres in Steuben township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, near Townville. He was a progressive Democrat and has held several minor township offices. During the Civil War, too young to pass the recruiting officers, he formed a wild plan to run away and join a cousin in the army, but was thwarted. He was a member of Steuben Grange, Patrons of Husbandry, and a communicant of the Baptist church.
