General Notes: Husband - Thomas Hartford Blackstone

Beginning the study of books in the typical log schoolhouse of pioneer days, when the teacher "boarded around," he acquired a practical knowledge of the branches taught, and while yet a lad became familiar with farm work. In those days all grain was cut with a cradle or a sickle, and either threshed with flails or trampled out with horses. Remaining on the homestead, he lived with his parents, or they with him, during their lives, and he succeeded to the ownership of the old home farm. Here he began housekeeping in the old log house. Meeting with eminent success as a general farmer, he erected a fine set of frame buildings, and made substantial improvements on the place, rendering it one of the most attractive and desirable estates in the neighborhood.
