He was educated in Springfield Township, Mercer County, PA, and followed farming for a number of years. In 1859 he was elected county commissioner, which office he held for six years. In 1873 he moved to Grove City and established a grocery and feed store. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church of Grove City.
