He was edu­cated in the common schools, and soon after attaining his majority he purchased the old homestead, upon which he had resided since his birth. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church, and politically, he a Republican. He served multiple terms as justice of the peace, and was recognized as one of the representative citizens of his community.
