York, York Co, PA

He became chief justice of the Supreme court of Pennsylvania, and was an associate in the same court with his lifelong friend, the distinguished jurist, John Bannister Gibson. Judge Black served as attorney general and later as Secretary of State in the cabinet of President Buchanan. After retiring from this position he took up his residence at York, Pennsylvania, and for a period of twenty-five years was one of the leaders of the American Bar, engaging entirely in the practice of law before the State Supreme courts and the Supreme court of the United States, until his death.
