In 1806 he accompanied his father and brother Thomas from Adams County, Pennsylvania, to Slippery Rock township, Butler County. His father purchased 400 acres of land and gave each of his sons 200 acres, and then returned to his home in Adams County. Hugh stayed about two years and then disposed of his land and went back to his early home. The land that he owned later formed part of the borough of Centreville.
